Commercial sales at the new Larnaka International Airport have begun encouragingly, despite soft British traffic and spend and recent disruption from the Icelandic volcano ash crisis. May retail sales have boomed, driven by a much-enhanced spend per head. That in turn is being driven by non-core categories that were enhanced or added at the new terminal when it opened last November. Read

Hellenic Duty Free HDFS sales dip but profits surge in Q1
Hellenic Duty Free Shops’ (HDFS) travel retail business posted €34.9 million in sales in Q1 2010, down by -2.6% year-on-year. But after-tax profits surged by +49.6% to €3.7 million in the quarter, while EBITDA increased by +18.8% to €7.8 million. Confectionery posted the major increase among the key product categories. Read

IATA International air travel falls by -2.4% in April as Icelandic volcano effect bites
Scheduled international air travel fell by some -2.4% year-on-year in April, according to the latest figures from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The key factor in the slide was the impact of the Icelandic volcano, which caused many flight cancellations over a six-day period during the month. “The ash crisis knocked back the global recovery," says IATA Director General and CEO Giovanni Bisignani. HKIA Hong Kong Airport unveils T1 F&B winners
Hong Kong International Airport has announced the result of a tender for dining licences in Terminal 1’s East Hall. Winners include Pizza Express and several restaurants recommended by the Michelin Guide. In other major news, fashion chain Zara will soon open a 1,000sq m store at the airport. Read

Los Angeles World Airports has just completed its Tom Bradley International Terminal renovation project – offering what the airport management team says is a new level of customer experience. Auckland Airport is investing several million dollars over the next two to three years to help develop the Asian tourism market, which it believes has huge potential. “The Asian tourism market opportunity is New Zealand’s best chance to surf the economic boom from emerging economies,” says Auckland Airport CEO Simon Moutter. Dubai International Airport Dubai posts strong surge in April traffic
Dubai International Airport posted a +13.9% surge in passenger traffic year-on-year in April despite the impact of the ash cloud from the Icelandic volcano, which affected air traffic worldwide in the month. “To record double-digit growth during a month in which over 500 flights were cancelled is impressive,” said Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths. Year-to-date passenger traffic has increased +18.7% to 15.2 million. Read

Abu Dhabi Airports Company posted a +10.1% year-on-year increase in April passenger traffic at Abu Dhabi International Airport. The strong result came despite what ADAC Senior Vice President of Airport Operations Ahmed Al Haddabi described as “extraordinary circumstances” caused by the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud which grounded numerous flights.
