The 25th edition of Fragrances of the World lists over 6,500 fragrances
AUSTRALIA. International fragrance expert Michael Edwards is set to mark a milestone in 2009 as his annual guidebook, Fragrances of the World
, turns 25.
The 25th anniversary edition of the fragrance encyclopaedia classifies over 6,500 fragrances and adds more than 800 new releases. The first guide released in 1984 listed just 323 fragrances.
The new edition is dedicated to Pierre Dinand, described as “the father of modern perfume bottle design”, with whom Edwards shares a studio with in Paris. Since 1960, Dinand has created more than 700 perfume bottles. Some of his most famous creations, such as the bottles for Opium, Pleasures and Obsession, are featured in the book, illustrated by his drawings.
The guide will be available from 2 January and will retail at US$185/£95/€130/AUD$185/NZ$240 (delivery not included).

A LOOK AT THE PAST 25 YEARS
1984: The first guide is released, listing just 323 fragrances.
1988: Major department store Nordstrom discovered the guide.
1991: At the request of Nordstrom, Edwards matched feminine and masculine fragrances, family by family, to help boost men's fragrance sales.
1998: Edwards was prompted by retailers to classify the niche fragrances. Today, Fragrances of the World
claims to be the only guide to list niche fragrances as well as limited editions.
2004: Edwards won his first FiFi award for the encyclopedic www.fragrancesoftheworld.info
database, an online derivative of his guidebook. The FiFi Awards are described as the Oscars of the international fragrance industry.
