Although Asia accounts for only 4% of total world consumption of wine, the potential for growth is strong

Asian market potential
The latest Vinexpo/IWSR study points to Asia as the driver of world growth in the global wine market, and predicts that spirits consumption should continue to grow in the region in coming years, although at a slower rate.
Even though Asia accounts for only 4% of total world consumption of wine – worth an estimated US$7 billion in 2009 – the potential for growth in these markets is strong. By 2013, the study forecasts that Asian sales will have reached US$9 billion.
The study underlines China and Hong Kong as the most dynamic markets; per capita consumption is rising and imports have jumped, up 8.7 million 9-litre cases in 2008. Japan, the seventh-largest wine importer in the world in value, continued to lead in Asia in 2008, importing the highest volume of wines and spending more than any other Asian country.
Asia Pacific accounts for 50.6% of total world spirits consumption. Between 2009 and 2013, this is expected to increase by a further +4.7%.
