CHINA (MACAU). The 2009 ACI Airport Business & Trinity Forum concluded triumphantly today with arguably the strongest day in the event’s history.
After a marvellous Gala Dinner the night before hosted by King Power Group (HK) and CAM – Macau International Airport Company, day two kicked off with a passionate speech from Asia Pacific Travel Retail Association President Sunil Tuli, who put a strong case against the World Health Organization’s campaign to abolish duty free tobacco sales.

Diageo's Phil Humphreys reignites the Trinity concept Diageo Global Travel & Middle East Managing Director Phil Humphreys talks Trinity and a winning formula at Singapore Changi Airport

He was followed by what some seasoned Trinity delegates later claimed to be the best presentation ever heard at the Forum. Diageo Global Travel & Middle East Managing Director Phil Humphreys addressed the theme ‘Creating a grand consumer stage’, via a powerful demand for all Trinity stakeholders to invest and partner to an unprecedented degree in an effort to grow the business [a full report on his speech will follow next week].
“Now is the time for the industry to step up as never before,” he said. “This is the time.”
Using a brilliantly scripted film, Humphreys showed how travel retail – if it seizes its opportunities, including digital media and social networking sites – could look in 2020. It was far-sighted, visionary and powerful stuff.
He also showed how airport authority buy-in can transform the industry – dwelling memorably on the Johnnie Walker Black Label Formula 1 campaign currently taking place at Singapore Changi Airport, where a full-size F1 car has been placed in the airside departures concourse at Terminal 3, together with tastings and a magnificent product display near the DFS store.
His speech won plaudits from airport companies and retailers alike – including The Nuance Group CEO Roberto Graziani, Zurich Airport Chief Commercial Officer Peter Eriksson and Abu Dhabi Airports Company Vice President of Commercial Revenues, Dan Cappell.

Next up was a film shot in Doha by Marshall Arts International especially for The Trinity Forum of Qatar Airways and Qatar Duty Free Company CEO Akbar Al Baker being interviewed by Martin Moodie.
Al Baker’s remarkable regeneration of Qatar Airways and his vision for the New Doha International Airport were outlined in a hard-hitting and compelling interview.
After that, Qatar Duty Free Company Vice President Keith Hunter joined Moodie on stage for an extensive discussion about how an “extraordinary” retail and food & beverage offer is being formulated for the new airport.

The day finished equally strongly with outstanding presentations from Sydney Airport Corporation Limited General Manager, Retail Derek Larsen; Zurich Airport Chief Commercial Officer Peter Eriksson and Duty Free Americas Airports Division President Enrique Urioste, followed by a panel discussion involving all three and a supplier (to complete the Trinity), Mars International Travel Retail’s Stuart Bull.
All agreed the Trinity principles of closer co-operation and better understanding had to be nurtured to grow the business – and each pointed to the benefits such an approach brought.
Emphasising the importance of the Trinity concept, Eriksson suggested The Trinity Forum could be underpinned by a small working group of airports, concessionaires and brands that met regularly during the year to drive industry progress.

Wrapping up proceedings, The Moodie Report Publisher Martin Moodie said: “This year’s Trinity Forum has reinvigorated the whole concept. I trust this event has proven that Trinity is not just rhetoric – that its talk down the years is truly being walked; and that its inherent spirit of partnership – when implemented – can and does make a difference on the grand consumer stage that Phil Humphreys referred to.
“In a year that has brought so much doom and gloom, the past two days have given me – and I hope you – tremendous cause for optimism,” he concluded.
