JAPAN. Tokyo Narita Airport maintained its dominant position in the Japanese air services market in 2009, handling 53.6% of Japanese outbound traffic in the year. That’s according to final 2009 figures from the Ministry of Justice, revealed by Travel Journal International (TJI) Online.
As previously reported, Japanese overseas travel hit 15.44 million in the year, down by -3.4% on 2008.
Of the total, 8.28 million used Narita Airport, down by -5.4%, the third year in a row of lower traffic (compared to the previous year). Narita’s share of 53.6% was slightly lower than the 54.7% it held in 2008.
Tokyo Haneda Airport increased its market share from 4% in 2008 to 5.1% in 2009, a share that is expected to rise as it adds new international services from October.
Haneda handled 780,022 Japanese travellers on overseas services in 2009, up by +21.9%, marking the sixth annual increase since 2004.
Kansai Airport recorded 3.18 million Japanese travellers, off by -4.5% for a 20.62% market share (down from 20.9% in 2008). The drop in traffic in 2009 marked the fourth consecutive year of lower figures since 2006, noted TJI Online.
Centrair in Nagoya handled some 1.57 million Japanese outbound travellers, down by -11.6%. That resulted in a market share of 10.2%, down from the 11.2% in 2008.
