SINGAPORE. Changi Airport handled 3.32 million passengers in October, up +6.0% compared to October 2008, Changi Airport Group reported today.

This is the third consecutive monthly increase following gains in August (+0.5% year-on-year) and September (+6.0%). The figures, though flattered by a soft comparison base in late 2008, underline a gradual steadying in the business environment.

The growth was fuelled by regional traffic (especially Malaysia and Indonesia), largely carried on low-cost carriers (LCCs). LCCs accounted for about 20% of passenger traffic at Changi Airport during the month.

The number of flights handled increased by +6.7% in October to 20,985, an all-time high. For the year to date the number of flights is 197,813, an increase of +3.0% compared to the same period in 2008.

As at 31 October Changi Airport was served by 85 airlines, connecting Singapore to 200 cities in 60 countries via 4,870 weekly scheduled flights.

The 200 city links represent a record-high for Changi, led by new city links mounted in the northern winter season to Krabi, Hat Yai (in Thailand), Wuhan (China), Muscat (Oman), Atlanta, Denver and Seattle (US).

The 4,870 weekly scheduled flights, also a record, was driven by increases in the number of weekly scheduled flights by regional carriers such as Garuda (additional 28 weekly flights to/from Jakarta) and LCCs such as Indonesia Air Asia (additional 28 weekly flights to/from Jakarta and 14 weekly flights to/from Denpasar/Bali).
