Heathrow honours Travel Product Awards winners - 18/05/09

UK. Winners of the inaugural Heathrow Travel Product Awards were presented with their prizes today at a ceremony held in the London Heathrow Terminal 3 outlet of London-based catering company rhubarb food design.

Winners were honoured in 12 categories – from gadgets to travel treats – as voted for by the public via a specially created microsite: www.heathrowtravelproduct.com

“More than 23,000 votes were cast in month-long nominations period, with votes coming in from across the world,” said BAA Retail Concessions Director Brian Woodhead at the ceremony.

Award winners will be able to feature the Heathrow Travel Product Awards’ logo on packaging and in advertising. Participating stores including World Duty Free, Harrods, Rolling Luggage, Mappin & Webb, WHSmith Books, Sony and Dixons are also running in-store activity during May to promote the winning products.

“The Heathrow Travel Product Awards celebrate the great and the good of travel accessories – from the essential to the indulgent. It has been a fantastic means of showcasing the many brands and products we have on offer at Heathrow’s airport shops,” said Woodhead.

The big winner of the day was World Duty Free, which took the awards for Best Airport Spirit (Hazelwood Reserve 17yo from William Grant & Sons), Best Holiday Fragrance for Men (Dior Homme Sport 100ml), Best Holiday Fragrance for Women (Prada Infusion d'Iris 100ml) and Beauty Product for Travel (Clarins Sun Protection Partners).

Best Leisure Technology Gadget – Apple iPod Touch 32GB
The iPod Touch beat the Panasonic TZ4 digital camera to be named this year’s must-have gadget. Third place went to the Sony Reader, which can hold up to 160 e-books at any one time.

Best Business Technology Gadget - 13” VAIO business laptop
The Sony 13” VAIO business laptop has been Sony’s best-selling model over the last year. Second and third place went to the hand-held Blackberry 8900 Javelin and Bose QuietComfort 3 acoustic noise-cancelling headphones, respectively.

Best Travel Read (Fiction) - Slumdog Millionaire by Vikas Swarup
Following in the footsteps of the Oscar-winning film, Slumdog Millionaire, Vikas Swarup’s epic was named Best Travel Read. Proving that film adaptations are growing in popularity,The Reader took second place, closely followed by Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Best Travel Read (Non Fiction) - Body Language by James Borg
James Borg’s 'Body Language' tops the category, with 'Who Runs Britain' by Robert Peston and 'Defiance' by Nechama Tec taking second and third place.

Best Innovative Luggage - Samsonite Freeminder Flex wheeled backpack
Voters chose the Samsonite Freeminder Flex in the Best Innovative Luggage category. The Porsche Roadster 530 trolley took second place, closely followed by the Radley Chesil cabin wheeled suitcase.

Most Stylish Travel Accessory - Sony TG3 camcorder
The Sony TG3 Camcorder beat the Mulberry Mitzy Tote to be named Most Stylish Travel Accessory. Third place went to the HP Mini Vivienne Tam.

Britain’s Best Souvenir – Paddington Bear
Michael Bond’s Paddington Bear took the Best Souvenir title. Other mementos of Britain that made the top three include Glorious Britain’s red London bus mug and Harrods shortbread.

My Travel Treat - Breitling Aerospace - Gents Aero Advantage Titanium Professional
In search of a little indulgence, voters chose the Breitling Aerospace watch as their favourite Travel Treat. Heathrow passengers can make a saving of more than £300 against the high street retail price of £2,000. The Mulberry Maxi Mabel handbag grabbed second place, with the Gents TAG-Heuer Carrera Tachymeter Chronograph in third.

Best Airport Spirit - Hazelwood Reserve 17 Year Old
The 17yo Hazelwood Reserve – of which just 500 bottles were produced and only 350 remain - was voted Best Airport Spirit. Selling more than 35,000 bottles at Heathrow last year, Baileys Coffee was a popular second choice, closely followed by Belvedere Intense.

Best Holiday Fragrance for Men - Dior Homme Sport 100ml
Dior Homme Sport was named Best Holiday Fragrance for Men. Second place went to Davidoff Adventure 100ml edt, while Armani Diamonds pour Homme 75ml edt took third position.

Best Holiday Fragrance for Women - Prada Infusion d’Iris 100ml
From the leading fashion house, Prada Infusion d’Iris was named Best Holiday Fragrance for Women. The warm amber, honey and cedarwood notes of Chloe edt secured second place and DKNY Fresh Blossom came third.

Beauty Product for Travel - Clarins Sun Protection Partners
With suncare on the agenda for summer, Clarins’ three-piece high-protection set, which features two sun creams and an aftersun, was a popular first choice. Must-have beauty regime Clinique Daily Essentials came in a polished second, closely followed by Elizabeth Arden’s skincare classic, the Eight Hour Travel Set.
