UAE. Abu Dhabi International Airport’s latest traffic figures released today (Tuesday) confirm its position as one of the fastest-growing airports in the Middle East region.
In February the airport showed a +32.7% rise in passenger growth and +16.9% rise for aircraft movements over the same period last year.
Rudy Vercelli: "Traffic coming to Abu Dhabi for business conferences and exhibitions is increasing rapidly"
The airport handled 648,301 passengers in February compared to 488,453 for the same month in 2007. Over the past 12 months, figures show a total of 7,272,134 passengers were handled, up +34%.
“The rapid and sustained growth of our number one customer and the UAE’s national airline, Etihad Airways, continues to be a key factor in the increase of traffic, particularly when assessing the increased frequencies and nine destinations that have been added to the network in the last 12 months,” said newly appointed Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) CEO Rudy Vercelli.
“In addition, it has also been noted that traffic coming to Abu Dhabi for business conferences and exhibitions is increasing rapidly and is having a clear effect on the profile of passengers through our airports,” he added.
A predicted downturn in worldwide passenger traffic in 2008 is not expected to be reciprocated across the Middle East region, said ADAC.
Judging by the latest statistics, growth in the early part of the year seems to demonstrate a general bucking of international trends that looks set to remain strong in 2008, it added.
