SOUTH KOREA. JDC this week celebrated the Grand Opening of its expanded duty free store at Jeju International Airport on Jeju Island. At 2,949sq m, the store offers a +65% increase over the former space, allowing for a big increase in cosmetics brands, such as Sisley, MAC and Bobbi Brown, plus more leading fashion names.

PHILIPPINES. Duty Free Philippines has stepped up a major store building and renovation programme, which, together with an ambitious multi-media campaign, is designed to target key consumer groups. On 11 June the retailer completed the renovation of its T2 Arrivals store at Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport with big T1 and T3 improvements coming soon. And today the company celebrated the soft opening of its new Laoag Airport store.

China Duty Free steps up airport store development

CHINA. China Duty Free Group (CDFG), the country’s leading travel retailer, will be stepping up the pace of its already rapid development with a series of ambitious store openings and extensions. Major projects are planned for Dalian and Kunming airports, and Vice President Charles Chen has said that duty paid retailing in domestic terminals will be a key growth sector. He also holds out the intriguing prospect of developing retailing onboard China’s booming high-speed rail network.

Travel retail charity project Hand in Hand for Haiti has begun the student intake for the Lycée (school) Jean-Baptiste Point du Sable that will open in September. “We now have 450 eligible applicants, drawn from those children aged 3, 4 and 5 years old who will comprise our applicant pool,” reports Debbie Brennan, wife of Hand in Hand for Haiti Founding Board member (and DFS Chairman and CEO) Ed Brennan.

To date, the multi-channel marketing and promotion campaign has helped drive a US$8.6 million or +15.6% year-on-year sales increase in the first four months of 2011.
