FRANCE. Pernod Ricard's consolidated sales for the third quarter 2009/2010, excluding tax and duties, climbed by +14% year-on-year to €1,538 million, the group said today. This stemmed from +16% organic growth, a +2% foreign exchange effect and a -3% group structure effect. Duty Free played a key role in driving the business, it noted.

US. Strong sales growth from international businesses, including travel retail, helped drive fiscal third quarter net sales at The Estée Lauder Companies. For the quarter ended 31 March, the group reported a +10% increase in sales, to US$1.86 billion. Net earnings for the quarter surged to US$57.5 million, compared with US$27.2 million last year.

INTERNATIONAL. Philip Morris International (PMI) has reported net revenues of US$6.49 billion for the first quarter of 2010, an increase of +16.1% on Q1 2009. Excluding the currency effect in the period, net revenues rose by +8%. Shipments were down in the period, but in the Eastern Europe, Middle East & Africa region this was offset by a strong performance from Marlboro, notably in duty free.

US. The Clark County Department of Aviation has issued a Request for Proposals for a liquor store in the baggage claim area of Las Vegas McCarran International Airport. The Arrivals unit would represent a first for US travel retail, said the airport authority. Director of Aviation Randy Walker said the pioneering store could generate between US$400,000 and US$600,000 in annual revenues, which he said would help offset airline landing charges.

US. Imperial Brands Inc has revealed that Sobieski, Poland’s number one premium vodka, broke a sales record by reaching 580,000 cases sold in 2009. Nestlé International Travel Retail will be highlighting the potential of confectionery sales at checkout with a new till point merchandising unit at the upcoming TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition in Singapore. “We’ve found that, where offered, confectionery sales can increase by more than +50% when a selection is available at the till point,” explains Nestlé International Travel Retail Head of Sales Ian Robertshaw.

UK. Port wine producer Andresen has just released the Andresen 1910 Colheita Port, designed by international brand consultancy Wren & Rowe. The grapes of this single harvest port were picked in 1910, and the wine has remained in barrel for the last 100 years. There will be just 120 bottles for sale at a price of €1,500 each.

From 1 April, travellers to Singapore will have more options in terms of their duty free liquor purchases, as Singapore Customs today announced changes to the category's duty free allowance. The changes will allow an additional one litre of wine or one litre of beer in lieu of one litre of spirits. Previously, the duty free allowance was one litre each for spirits, wine and beer.

HONG KONG. The government of Hong Kong is planning to abolish inbound duty free tobacco allowances for travellers, citing “public health reasons". The move comes as a further blow to the duty free tobacco business, which had previously been hit by the slashing of inbound allowances from 200 cigarettes to 60 in 2007.

ENGLAND. The government today published a consultation document on proposed tobacco control regulations for England. These have significant repercussions for the way tobacco products are displayed in-store. On Monday 21 September the third and final phase of the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center was opened, at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that formally began operations at the largest base exchange in the world. The 165,000sq ft tax-free outlet is located within a one-stop shopping mall that also features 43 concept shops, among them the world’s first The Body Shop store within the military channel, operated by Pentrade.
